Function Is the Foundation of Your Smile
All your teeth play an important role in speaking and chewing. They also help to maintain the proper alignment of all your other teeth. Your teeth work together as an entire unit, and when something is missing, it can be difficult to do daily tasks.
Missing teeth can cause speech disorders and present an increased risk of gum disease too.
If teeth are lost or badly damaged, they will need to be replaced to maintain proper mouth function. At Van Mills Dental, we can offer options for correcting tooth loss.
Your smile is a beautiful thing, but it needs to be functional too! Book your appointment with Van Mills Dental today.
What Is a Bridge?
A bridge is a device used to replace missing teeth. It attaches artificial teeth to adjacent natural teeth, called abutment teeth.
Oral functionality and appearance are important reasons for a bridge, but dental health is paramount and the main reason your dentist may recommend one.
Bridges maintain your facial features by supporting your lips and cheeks. They also alleviate the stresses placed on the gums and other oral tissues when teeth are missing.
2 Types of Bridges
We offer both fixed and removable bridge options.
Fixed Bridges
Fixed bridges are applied by either placing crowns on the abutment teeth or bonding the artificial teeth directly to the abutment teeth.
Removable Bridges
Removable bridges are attached to the teeth with metal clasps or precision attachments.
What Is the Process?
It usually takes 2 or 3 appointments to completely attach your new bridge.
First Appointment
During your first appointment, your dentist will prepare the teeth on either side of the missing tooth by removing a portion of the enamel. This allows room for the crowns to be placed over them.
We will take impressions of the teeth to make sure we get things precise—we’re aiming for a perfect fit! The impressions will then be sent to a lab where the bridge will be constructed.
You’ll wear a temporary bridge until your new device is complete. The temporary bridge protects the exposed teeth and gums.
Subsequent Appointments
During your second appointment, your temporary bridge will be removed, and we’ll check the finished bridge, making any adjustments necessary.
If your bridge is fixed, it will be cemented to the natural teeth next to the gap left by the missing tooth. A false tooth, known as a pontic, replaces the lost tooth. Crowns will also be placed on the abutment teeth to provide support for the bridge.
Caring for Your Bridge
Keeping your remaining teeth healthy is paramount since your bridge relies on the neighbouring teeth for support. Brushing, flossing, and dentist-recommended oral care are imperative.
