Mercury-Free Fillings

Many people have silver fillings from years past that contain mercury. These fillings are also known as amalgam fillings—they contain silver and other metals, including mercury.

Amalgam fillings are not dangerous but do have several drawbacks. Many patients do not like the look of these fillings—seeing flashes of silver in your mouth when you speak is not pleasing to the eye. The tooth structure around the amalgam filling can also discolour and take on a greyish hue due to the metals.

Silver fillings result in a weaker tooth structure than other types of materials. Expansion and contraction happen in teeth when hot and cold liquids come into contact with them, and amalgam fillings are more susceptible to cracks and fractures as a result.

When cracks occur, the tooth might not be protected, and cavities can form again. At Van Mills Dental, we provide other options for fillings, including tooth-coloured restorations.

Tooth-Coloured Restorations

If you have amalgam fillings, they can be safely replaced with tooth-coloured restorations. These fillings have many advantages, not the least of which is a more natural look.

Tooth-coloured restorations are made of composite resin that bonds to the teeth, creating a fit that moulds to the natural tooth. They are helpful when parts of the tooth structure have been lost and can repair chipped, broken, or worn teeth. The resin used can also prevent decay because it contains fluoride.
